Expert Concussion Assessment and Rehabilitation
A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury caused by a direct blow to the head, or by a force transmitted to the head from an impact elsewhere on the body. It can temporarily affect how the brain functions and may cause physical, cognitive, visual, balance, emotional and sleep related symptoms.
Concussion does not always involve a loss of consciousness, and symptoms may not be immediately obvious. Headache, dizziness, nausea, poor balance, visual disturbance, fatigue, sensitivity to light or noise, difficulty concentrating, memory problems and feeling unusually emotional or irritable can all occur following a concussion.
Although most people recover well, every suspected concussion should be taken seriously. Returning to sport or demanding activity too soon may aggravate symptoms, delay recovery and expose the individual to further injury. Early recognition, appropriate assessment and a carefully managed rehabilitation programme can help support a safer and more effective recovery.
Our Concussion Service
Our Initial Concussion Assessment provides a comprehensive expert evaluation following a head injury. The purpose of the appointment is to assess whether your symptoms and clinical findings are consistent with concussion, identify the areas contributing to your symptoms and determine the most appropriate next steps.
The assessment is suitable for adults, children and young people who have experienced a suspected concussion through sport, exercise, a fall or another head injury.
Where the assessment identifies concerns that require additional medical investigation, we will explain this clearly and advise on the most appropriate referral or escalation pathway.
Clear Guidance Following Your Assessment
Following the assessment, we will explain our findings clearly and provide an individual plan for your recovery.
If concussion is diagnosed, you will receive the latest evidence based guidance on returning gradually to everyday activity, education, work, exercise and sport.
We will guide you through a graduated return to sport pathway, ensuring that activity is progressed safely and at the appropriate stage of your recovery. Returning to sport is not simply based on waiting for a set number of days. Your symptoms, clinical findings, activity tolerance and response to progressive exercise must all be considered.
Personalised Concussion Rehabilitation
Concussion can affect people in different ways. Symptoms may arise from several areas, including the vestibular system, visual system, cervical spine, balance system, exercise intolerance or a combination of factors.
Your rehabilitation programme will therefore be based on the specific findings from your assessment rather than a generic set of exercises.
Your programme may include:
• Balance and coordination exercises
• Vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness or movement sensitivity
• Visual and eye movement exercises
• Neck mobility and strengthening exercises
• Controlled aerobic exercise
• Gradual exposure to symptom provoking activities
• Progressive sport specific rehabilitation
• Advice regarding sleep, daily activity, education and work
The aim is to address the factors contributing to your symptoms, optimise recovery and help you return to normal activity with confidence.
The SCRX concussion clinic includes an assessment of:
- Memory, concentration and cognitive function
- Balance and postural control
- Coordination
- Eye movements and visual tracking
- Vestibular function and dizziness
- Neck movement and cervical spine symptoms
- Neck movement and cervical spine symptoms
