Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training

At South Coast Rx, we utilise Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training as a powerful tool in rehabilitation to help clients build strength and muscle mass safely — even when load or intensity needs to be limited due to injury or pain.

What Is BFR Training?

BFR involves the use of specialised cuffs or bands applied to the upper or lower limbs to partially restrict blood flow to working muscles during low-load resistance training. This creates a physiological environment that mimics high-intensity training — without the need to lift heavy weights.

Is BFR Safe?

When used by trained professionals and with appropriate screening, BFR is a safe and well-researched modality in both athletic and general rehab settings. We’ll always assess whether BFR is suitable for you based on your medical history, injury type, and rehab goals.

Why Is It Effective in Rehab?

  • Post-operative recovery (e.g., ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair)
  • Acute injury phases where tissue loading is restricted
  • Managing chronic joint pain or osteoarthritis
  • Deconditioning due to long periods of inactivity
  • Supporting muscle maintenance during periods of reduced training or immobilisation
